Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj

According to multiple sources, Mariah is indeed on fire in more ways than one. Earlier this month, she was chosen as the new judge of American Idol. This comes after the departure of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. Since the addition of Mariah, many other names have been thrown around, including Nicki Minaj. Word on the street is, Mariah is not happy about this at all. It is being said that she was told she would be the only female judge, and the addition of Nicki would ruin that for her.

Even though I stopped watching American Idol many seasons ago, I for one, think that the addition of Mariah Carey is a good thing. For one, Mariah actually has talent. The last season I actually watched was when Kara DioGuardi was a judge, and that was because, unlike Paula Abdul, she actually has musical talent. Although I love Ellen, I never thought she had any place judging a musical talent show. I don’t think you can put just any familiar personality on TV and hope that it will work out.

The only problem I see with Mariah being a judge is that she seems a bit aloof, and may possibly be too nice. Simon Cowell may agree with me on that. He spoke about it at the Television Critics Associations’s summer press tour, saying, “I’m happy for her. I like Mariah. I think she’s going to find it difficult to say no… She’s sweet.”

Now Nicki, is a whole different story. IF she can decide which personality she is going to be for the day, who is to say that personality knows ANYTHING about singing talent.  American Idol may be fishing for ratings, and let’s face it, they could use them.

In my opinion, I think they should just give up on the whole show.  They are clearly just reaching in to thin air to produce judges for this show, and it’s looking pretty desperate at this point. Simon is pretty much the glue that held the show together. He was brutally honest, and saw the show for what it was, a business. Since Simon left, they have basically had a cookie cutter winner. I suppose that is what America wants, since they are the final votes, but I am over it. What do you think? Should American Idol sing another tune? Or, is it time for the fat lady to sing?
